‘NONNA?’ Tom smiled as he spoke into the hotel phone.

‘Yes, who is it?’

‘It’s Tom, Nonna. How are you?’

‘Oh, Toto, dear boy, I’m wonderful. Where are you?’

‘I’m in America. In Washington DC. I didn’t wake you up, did I?’

‘No, you know we get up with the sun. It’s so good to hear your voice.’

‘You’ll hear a lot more of it soon. I’m coming home. I’ll be home in two days.’

‘Two days? That’s such good news. I’ll get your father. He’s having his breakfast.’

‘Don’t disturb him, Nonna. Let me talk to you.’

‘All right then. Now, tell me—are you fit and well? Are they feeding you good food?’

‘I’m in perfect health. How’s everyone at home?’

‘We’re all doing OK. Hey, Toto, you sound good. You sound happy.’

‘I am happy, Nonna.’

‘You’re in love!’

Chuckling, he flopped back on to the hotel bed and grinned up at the ceiling. ‘How’d you guess?’

‘I’m your nonna, I can hear it in your voice. Tell me about her. She’s beautiful, isn’t she?’

‘Of course.’

‘Where does she live?’

‘Here. In America.’

‘Oh. That’s not such good news. What are you going to do about it?’

‘It’s OK. I’ll work it out.’ Suddenly he swung upright again and clutched the phone. ‘Nonna, you might as well know. I’ve found Mary.’

This was greeted by silence, then, ‘Mary? That girl who broke your heart?’

‘Yes.’

‘Oh, Toto. Do you know what you’re doing?’

‘Yes, I’ve never been surer.’

‘Is she coming back with you?’

‘Not yet. I’ll explain the whole story when I get home, but don’t you worry about me. It’s going to be fine, just fine, Nonna.’

‘OK, I believe you for now. But you hurry home. I want to look into your face and see for myself that this Mary is making you happy.’

‘OK. I’ll see you very soon. Behave yourself until Tuesday—no, it’ll be Wednesday your time before I get home. Ciao.’

‘Have a safe journey, Toto. Ciao.’

Tom told himself that a man aged thirty shouldn’t get so worked up about a kiss. But the truth of it was that although he’d dated his share of women in the past eight years a simple kiss from Mary had eclipsed all the rest.

From the first trembling touch of Mary’s lips he’d been lost. Lost in the delicate, unforgettable taste of her. Driven wild by the sensational smoothness of her skin beneath his hands, by the sexy pressure of her sweet breasts straining against him, the soft, eager little sounds she made as her excitement mounted.

He had been spellbound by the same mysterious magic and amazing chemistry of their youth. With Mary in his arms again, he was a born again convert to the reality of love. Love was real! It was powerful. It made sense of life.

Nothing could dim his happiness—not even the fact that Mary was Ed’s wife.

He felt no guilt about kissing Mary. There wasn’t the slightest pang that he’d done anything to be ashamed of. If he’d thought Ed could ever know, or be hurt by his actions, he would have stayed clear away. But Tom was certain that Ed couldn’t be hurt…
